The inflatable STX iWindsurf RS 285 is designed to be used as a family board for windsurfing, SUP and wingsurfing in light winds. We have tried out the WindSUP.

The iWindsurf RS model from manufacturer STX is available in a total of four sizes, with the 285 we tested representing the top end of the range. In contrast to the SUPs available on the market with a windsurfing option, the STX iWindsurf RS is a board designed primarily for windsurfers. The scope of delivery includes a leash for use as a SUP or wingboard as well as four foot straps, which are comparatively spartan and can be mounted in a predetermined position and in one size. A soft EVA pad has been glued to the deck over a large area. A suitable pump and a bag are also included, and the pack size is around 105 x 55 x 35 centimetres.
With a volume of 330 litres and a full 95 centimetres in width, the iWindsurf RS 285 is quite powerful, but the weight (surf measurement: 11.02 kg) is absolutely reasonable. While many inflatable boards only offer a simple thread glued into the deck, the STX model has been fitted with a large plastic plate, which is designed to distribute the forces evenly. A sharper plastic tear-off edge has been glued to the underside at the rear to reduce drag and prevent the board from sticking to the water in stronger winds. Four fins are also included in the scope of delivery; a centre fin is provided for windsurfing and wing use, which offers little draft but plenty of surface area.

How to ride the STX iWindsurf RS 285

The generous width allows even absolute watersports beginners and heavyweights to stand up comfortably. Although inflatable board concepts are always a little more wobbly in direct comparison with hardboards, this is hardly an issue with a board of this size. The 285's speed in light winds is moderate, which is primarily due to the large width of the board. In this respect, the foot straps are more of a symbolic act, as neither the shape nor the fins are designed for real planing. More than half planing is not possible, even in strong winds. Nevertheless, you can have a lot of fun with the board, especially in light and medium winds (2-12 knots): The board tracks comfortably and can be turned really well, even when equipped with smaller sails or wings, thanks to its compact length. Lateral drift is limited by the centre fin, but it cannot completely prevent lateral drift, especially if the board is motorised with small children's sails/wings (<3.5sqm). In any case, the board fulfils the claim of being a family board, with a volume of 330 litres it can carry almost an entire extended family.

STX iWindsurf RS 285 - the conclusion

The STX iWindsurf RS 285 is the right choice for anyone looking for a stable board for light and medium winds that both beginners and children can have fun on. Due to its width, its use as a SUP is limited to short tours. However, the price of 799 euros seems quite fair in view of the equipment.
