The first wing from NeilPryde, the Fly model, we had already presented to you in a test report. The all-rounder has now been redesigned, resulting in the Fly 2, which is available in two colour combinations and twelve sizes. In addition to the classic version tested here, the Fly 2 Pro There is also a version made of rigid laminate material available, but this will tear a much bigger hole in the budget.
On land
Compared to the second NeilPryde model in the group, the Boom-Wing Firefly (Here is a test) the outline of the Fly 2 has a higher aspect ratio, i.e. it is slightly more elongated, with a longer wingspan and shorter strut. At first glance, the Fly 2 has not changed significantly from its predecessor, but certain details have been adapted. For example, a stronger segmentation of the front tube and a modified material mix should ensure greater stiffness of the wing.
The wing is still ventilated and deflated via two separate SUP valves. The front of the model has a high degree of fabric tautness, while the rear edge is cut comparatively loosely. Small mini battens are designed to prevent flapping at this point. The wing has two small windows at the front and two more windows further back. These enlarge the viewing corridor to leeward in a sensible way, but are made of gridded X-Ply material, which is less susceptible to creasing during packing.
The grip strap on the front tube is rather narrow, but it is nice and stiff, which results in a very direct steering impulse. The handle system is also well done: the bars are thin, comfortable to grip and well rounded at the corners, so there is hardly any risk of injuring yourself or damaging the board in the event of a crash on the deck. In addition, the handles, which protrude far away from the strut, are easy to grip when launching and manoeuvring - accidentally grabbing them is almost impossible. Solid Kevlar patches protect the wingtips against abrasion and emphasise the wing's high level of equipment.
On the water
Despite all the updates - and this is good news - the second version of the Fly Wing has retained its good light wind power. The wing balances itself perfectly when starting off and immediately offers a defined lift that makes it easy for less technically experienced riders to get on the foil. The NeilPryde Fly 2 also converts pumping into lift very efficiently, as it is not extremely stiff, but offers some "life" in the form of flexibility. In a straight line, you can grip the thin carbon spars very relaxed and with perfect pull distribution. A good mixture of flight stability on the one hand and still enough agility when flying straight ahead - a characteristic that everyone can actually live with. Even if the wing is not an absolute lightweight on the scales, it is still extremely comfortable in the hands during manoeuvres. The trailing edge stays up for a long time, even when manoeuvring downwind or riding swells. The Fly 2 also has noticeable advantages over its sister model, the Firefly, especially in waves - whether downwind or in the surf - as it is even better balanced due to its larger wingspan and carries less weight on the strut. The firm handles of the Fly 2 ensure direct transmission of control movements. In strong gusts, you almost wish the wing was a little more neutral. If you release the pressure, the wing remains easy to ride, but occasionally the trailing edge starts to flutter slightly. Overall, however, the wind range is absolutely convincing, with top light wind performance and very acceptable control.
NeilPryde Fly 2 - the conclusion
The NeilPryde Fly 2 is a tad tighter and more controllable than its predecessor, but has fortunately retained its all-round character. Power and handling are at a high level, making the Wing suitable for beginners as well as freeriders and trickers who are honing their ambitious freestyle moves.
