The ION Rush Vest is a wing harness and impact protection waistcoat with puncture-resistant padding in one. We tried it out - read the test report here.

Almost every wingfoiler uses an impact protection waistcoat - for good reason. However, it is problematic to combine these waistcoats with harnesses (HERE is an overview of which trapezoids make sense). With the Rush Vest, manufacturer ION now has a concept in its programme that can either be used as an impact protection harness combination or both components individually. We tried out the new product.

Flexible plates to protect against the foil

The Rush Vest has a modular design, so the individual protectors can be added or omitted as required. The same applies to the harness. In contrast to conventional impact protection waistcoats, the Rush Vest has flexible plates in addition to the padding, which have the main function of preventing puncture injuries from the sharp foil. The chest and back are then actually encased in protective armour - so the feeling of invincibility spreads from the very first time you put it on. The positive aspect here, however, is that the flexible plates have been designed in such a way that freedom of movement is not restricted. Another clever feature is the padding in the shoulder area, i.e. exactly where you often put down the hard foam mast when wearing the equipment. The waistcoat is available in sizes S/M/L/XL and XXL for 339.99 euros.

The harness is attached to the back of the ION Rush Vest using Velcro fasteners. The height can be individually adjusted, both low and very high hook positions are possible. The fastening is simple and functional. The hook sits tightly against the body and does not fold to the side, as is the case with some other wing harnesses. If you set the hook rather low, you have to be careful when getting on the board so as not to "immortalise" the hook in the board. Once hooked in, the pull is distributed very comfortably over the back, and the Rush Vest offers significantly more comfort in this respect than many other wing harnesses, some of which have a rather minimalist design. The only thing we missed was the option of attaching a leash - so if you are travelling with a hip leash, you will be in trouble here.

In practical use, the waistcoat protects against hard impacts on the water, but also offers additional safety in the event of unplanned foil contact. Nevertheless, the freedom of movement of the arms is always guaranteed. The armouring in the back area also distributes the forces of the harness very comfortably and evenly. This is particularly beneficial if you are attached to large, powerful wings and sometimes ride long strokes.

ION Rush Vest - the conclusion

The ION Rush Vest offers outstanding protection without noticeably restricting freedom of movement. The modular design makes absolute sense and the harness distributes the forces that occur very comfortably - the waistcoat is therefore also ideal for long strokes in strong winds or for use in races.

Good protection; modular design

Hook does not fold away

No leash lock
