The Foxx model from manufacturer GA Sails is available in two colour variants and in numerous sizes from 2.2 to 4.0 square metres. We tried out the 2.5 square metre version.
On land
The GA-Sails Foxx children's sail is not explicitly sold as a complete set, here you have to buy the corresponding components in addition to the sail - an RDM mast 300 with 30 per cent carbon content and the Foxx boom with an adjustment range of 120 to 170 centimetres are recommended here. The features of the 3-batten sail are probably well described by the term "mid-range" - the features seem much more valuable than those of the STX or Ascan, for example, but also somewhat simpler than those of the top sails in the test group. The GA-Sails Foxx is rigged on a three-metre mast. Due to the Vario top, even longer masts could theoretically be used - but we recommend using the shortest possible masts here too. The children's boom supplied for testing has pleasantly thin spars and can be easily folded onto the mast. The head piece sits firmly on the mast and the spars are above-average stiff, even when bigger kids pull on the spar. The adjustment system is also proven and of high quality.
On the water
The total weight of the components on the Foxx is quite low, which is immediately noticeable as a positive when you first catch up. In light winds, the sail is wonderfully light in the hands on the straight and offers reasonable propulsion. In order to get planing, you have to look for the angle of attack to the wind with a little more technique than elsewhere, so it takes a little longer, especially in winds at the planing limit, until you can constantly convert the sail draft into propulsion. Our tip: Don't trim the sail too much on the outhaul rope, but consciously allow more profile. Once planing, however, the Foxx lies well in the hand, becomes fast and allows sporty windsurfing. The wider lower leech only interferes with certain sailing tricks, but sporty planing manoeuvres such as power jibes or first jumps are great with the Foxx. The profile also holds its shape well in strong gusts, which translates into good speed potential.
GA-Sails Foxx - the conclusion
The GA-Sails Foxx children's sail scores as a good mid-range sail in a wide wind range and is therefore suitable for young beginners as well as for kids who want to step on the gas in strong winds.
Large wind range; good handling
