As a complement to its sister model DaCurve (look here for the test), the DaBomb is designed as an all-rounder for typical Euro wave conditions.
Features & details
Compared to the DaCurve, the DaBomb is somewhat shorter and slightly wider. The nose and tail sections are kept rather slim, with a moderate double concave V running through the bottom from front to back. The tail kick is also moderate. The heavily doubled pads in the heel area take some time getting used to. These offer great cushioning, but standing with a high heel is not everyone's cup of tea. The DaBomb comes with thruster fins from K4 Fins, which have quite a lot of rake and therefore flex more. The straps are ok, but offer less comfort than many other models.
On the water
Before starting to plane, the Tabou DaBomb with its slim nose and tail sections is a little more tippy in the water - but that's about all the criticism. The board converts gusts perfectly into speed, accelerates powerfully and achieves a high top speed as well as a sporty, free planing position. This makes it a great way to look for suitable ramps to make the airspace unsafe on the way through the surf. The riding characteristics are pleasing in that the board is lively and agile, but still offers the necessary level of control and suspension in rough conditions.
The board is particularly impressive in small and medium sized waves: It feels lively and variable when riding down the face, and you can adjust the radius at any time to hit the lip of the wave at the perfect point. However, when the wave gets rough and the wind gets strong, the Tabou requires more concentration when riding waves - it tends to dance on the water and doesn’t quite offer the full grip and rail-like control that its sister model, the DaCurve, scores so highly with. Conversely, the DaBomb is also excellent at picking up speed in weaker waves, making it the ideal board for getting the best out of “bad” conditions and putting together powerful turns and wave moves.
Tabou DaBomb 84 - the conclusion
Good planing, lively and variable - the DaBomb is a great toy for typical Euro wave conditions. Only those surfers looking for maximum control for big, powerful ocean swells or rough spots won’t be 100 percent happy.
