"A motorhome like that would be great," she said, my wife, and that it's totally on trend and that all her friends would think it was great too.

"We don't even have a motorhome. Something like that costs 50 or 60 thousand, if you can even get one. We can stay in a hotel for 30 years for that!" "Sure, that's luxury." "What's luxury about a mini wet room where I have one leg in the shower, the shower head on my neck and my knees stuck under the sink when I'm sitting on the loo?" "Borrow one?" "Wow."

The old Ducato drove quite comfortably, who has stress at 90 km/h on the motorway, except those behind us. It was a long way to the sea and it was already getting dark, so we needed a stopover. A campsite? Oh how romantic, here next to the dirt track! "What's for dinner?" "Ah, nothing, we wanted to do some shopping on site." "We'll do it tomorrow then." "Tomorrow is Sunday." "Stupid."

The plates in the cupboard that weren't fastened were broken and: "Iii, mosquitoes and ants!" Forgot to close the screen door. Good night.

"The car is askew. Can't sleep like this." "Lie on your side." "There are your feet." So I spent the night in the driver's seat. Out into the open at five in the morning, all four wheels sunk into the field up to the axle, bravo.

9 a.m.: 50 euros for the farmer with the tractor - luxury. On to the sea.

Funny, it was never that far with our estate car. But at some point we ended up roughly where we wanted to go and rattled off the campsites. "Have you reserved a pitch?" "No, why?"

"First time campers?" These questions led us 200 or 300 kilometres further south, where we found a nice spot next to a dilapidated toilet block. But without electricity and WiFi. Also kind of romantic. No electricity but no fridge, which is why we always buy everything fresh at the market. Fresh is better, but 30 kilometres away.

Then finally windsurfing! A whole week of wind, sun, freedom, adventure and oh yes, first our harnesses were gone, the day before our journey home the neos that were hanging from the tree. On the last night it started pouring with rain and the site became a muddy mess. Thank goodness at least the rigs were dry under the camper - I realised as soon as we drove away.

Well, all in all, our beginner's tour was a complete flop. But not with me, I'm buying one of these motorhomes tomorrow.
