Garmin fēnix 7 Pro field test: the all-in-one smartwatch for water sports enthusiasts
The fēnix 7 Pro is the latest generation of the multisport smartwatch from Garmin and is perfect for water sports such as stand-up paddling, windsurfing or wingfoiling.

The fēnix series from Garmin has been around for over 10 years, and the functions and features have been further improved with each generation. In the current generation, the MIP touch display with solar charge lens is particularly easy to read, even in direct sunlight. In smartwatch mode, the battery life is up to 37 days, while in GPS mode for activity recording, a runtime of up to 122 hours is possible. This means that the Garmin fēnix 7 Pro clearly outperforms the current Apple Watch in terms of battery life.

The fēnix 7 Pro is available in three sizes (42 mm, 47 mm, 51 mm). All models include an integrated LED torch for better orientation and safety at night. The version with Sapphire glass is particularly resistant and is ideal for extreme conditions such as white water activities when stand-up paddling.

Garmin fēnix 7 Pro as perfect training partner

With over 80 sports and outdoor apps, the smartwatch supports an active lifestyle. In addition to common sports such as running, hiking, cycling and HIIT, inline skating, BMX, motorbike riding and various team sports are also included. Animated cardio, strength, yoga and Pilates workouts can be shown on the smartwatch display to add variety to your training. The smartwatch also indicates the ideal time for the next training session.

To optimise SUP or surfing sessions, the Garmin fēnix 7 Pro offers comprehensive physiological measurements and training analyses. These include VO2max values, training status, load focus, recovery times and training effects. The new 5th generation HR sensor provides sport-specific measurements to determine these values. A new function called endurance value shows the development of personal endurance based on all recorded sporting activities and a combination of physiological measurements.

Plan and paddle SUP tours

The Garmin fēnix 7 Pro offers precise navigation for SUP tours on rivers or lakes. The multi-frequency reception in combination with SatIQ technology and ABC sensors enables precise positioning. With the pre-installed international TopoActive maps, you will never lose sight of your destination. Tours can be conveniently created or searched for in the Garmin Connect app and then synchronised with the watch. For example, you can plan SUP river tours in advance and always know where you are and how far it is to your destination while paddling.

Comparison between the Garmin fenix 7 Pro and the fenix 5 Plus

Compared to the Garmin fēnix 5 Plus, which was launched in 2018, the fēnix 7 Pro contains many new technologies and further developments. In addition to the side buttons, the fēnix 7 Pro also has a touch display, which makes operation much more intuitive and faster. The reaction speed when zooming or moving the map is also faster than with the fēnix 5 Plus. The presentation of functions and values on the display has been improved and is now easier to read. Data recording is more accurate than ever before thanks to optimised satellite reception and the choice of the best positioning system (GPS, Glonass, Galileo).

Safety and emergency assistance are a top priority for the Garmin fēnix 7 Pro. If a fall is detected, the smartwatch sends the current location to predefined emergency contacts via the paired smartphone and starts live tracking. The emergency can also be triggered manually.

The fēnix 7 Pro offers optimised 24/7 health monitoring to keep an eye on your health around the clock. This includes functions such as heart rate measurement on the wrist, Pulse Ox Sensor, Body Battery, Jet Lag Advisor and advanced sleep analysis with Sleep Score. Immediately after waking up, the Morning Report shows an overview of the previous night's sleep as well as training prospects for the coming day or the status of heart rate variability (HRV).
