The Ferrari red colour is not deceptive despite the matt finish - the Severne Fox can easily compete in the freerace class at top speed and also conveys the corresponding free riding feeling. However, some of the technical details already hint at the horsepower-boosting orientation, which is not aimed at gliding climbers: The strap position can only be varied between a moderately sporty and a very sporty position, and the classy carbon fin stands sharp and steep in the tail. The pads under the front straps are strongly wedge-shaped and raised under the toes, which improves comfort and control on the otherwise flat deck when planing - but also somewhat restricts the range of movement when dipping.
In the underwater hull, a strong V extends from the tail to the bow, which only becomes slightly double concave at the front. With a length of 2.41 metres, the Fox planes smoothly, preferring a very easy space course before gaining height in full planing. Even then, the fin prefers to glide upwind rather than being pressed onto a closehauled course, the rounded edges at the back give a little less lateral grip. The thin fin profile is low-drag and fast, the board flies freely and is very stable, especially around the transverse axis. The slightly narrower hull needs to be guided around the longitudinal axis, but otherwise rolls very easily without body tension and is not as concrete on the water as the boards from RRD and JP. This also makes the Fox more agile and therefore a whole lot more lively.
Lively and versatile, but also a little more demanding, the Fox jibes its way through the water. The board is easy to edge for carving, but without active, skilful guidance, the Fox sometimes wobbles off the ideal line, especially if waves have to be crossed during the jibe. In choppy water, jibes require full concentration, but in smooth water, full throttle turns can be channelled into the water in all desired radii - which also require good timing for smooth gliding.
Severne Fox 115 - the conclusion
A sporty, fast board for lots of speed and very fast jibes - at least with good riding skills. The extravagant pads and comfortable straps provide very good grip. The new Severne Verso freeride board could be more interesting for intermediates.
