Apart from a softer fin set-up, the Pyro starts the new season unchanged. We tested whether it is still competitive.
On land:
The Severne Pyro comes out of the box with a new look and low weight. The centre fins are relatively short, the loops are soft and comfortable and the pads are particularly structured for a good grip on deck. The same Allen key that works as a batten tensioner is used to fit the fins and the comfortable loops. With its five built-in fin boxes, the board offers all options from single fin to quad set-up. In the underwater hull, a slight mono-concave runs from the front to the centre, with a slight "V" just before the fins.
On the water:
When it comes to planing, the Pyro sets off the first fireworks. It glides effortlessly into planing even without an active riding style, accelerates powerfully and reaches a good top speed that encourages every wave fan to catapult themselves to delicious heights with the first ramp. When powered up, the Pyro pulls quite rail-like through the chop, and in choppy conditions you sometimes almost wish for more lift on the straight, i.e. a freer planing feeling. surf tip: Mount the straps and base plate quite far back! If you weigh over 85 kilos, you could also consider using 15 mm centre fins to give the board a little more lift when planing.
On the wave, carving turns on the Severne Pyro are a real pleasure; hardly any other board offers such good edge grip. Because you don't have to worry about any bumps in the bottom turn and the board also holds its speed superbly, you always arrive at the lip of the wave at full speed. These are the best prerequisites for all wave moves and cutbacks. However, you have to push a little harder on the Pyro in the turn to elicit really tight radii from the shape, the board generally loves turns that are carved over the whole rail rather than the short, fast hooks that you shake out of your ankle in front of microwaves.
Severne Pyro 2 87 - the conclusion:
The Pyro is and remains a well-balanced all-rounder that feels just as comfortable in big waves as it does on the North and Baltic Seas. Thanks to its successful combination of planing power, control and good turning characteristics, the target group ranges from wave beginners to cracks.
