Now there’s a question worthy of debate… Here’s the thing: talk to 10 motorcyclists about their idea of the perfect adventure bike and you’ll get 10 different answers. For years I was convinced that I knew the answer to this question, but in the run-up to the trip I have changed my mind several times, to the extent that I was actually modifying two separate bikes in my garage.
One of them was a little 250cc single. Why? Because it was there, it was light, it was reliable and mechanically simple. Stick in some stronger suspension springs, add a larger fuel tank, more comfortable seat, strengthen the sub-frame, add stronger ‘bars, engine protection, 12v electrics, touring screen and then you’re ready to go.
But then I found a bike with all of the above – and more. The BMW F 800 GS Adventure.
