For many people, camping and water sports go hand in hand, with vanlife and a little adventure feeling thrown in! Ideal are campsites right by the water where you can get on the water without having to pack up and leave again in the evening. We introduce you to some campsites in northern Germany right on the water!

Do you know of any other campsites directly at the spot? Please send us an e-mail with tips to redaktion@surf-magazin.de - whether in Germany or elsewhere! We are gradually expanding our collection!

Flügger beach

The Flügger Strand campsite is located on the west coast of Fehmarn, with no pitch more than a few metres from the water. The spot conditions are similar to those in Püttsee, which is within sight a few hundred metres to the north: A sandbank slows the waves down a little just before the beach and allows them to break, and with side- or sideonshore (SW) there are sometimes one or two turns on the wave. However, the waves here are rarely really threatening; instead, good Baltic Sea freeride conditions are possible in all westerly wind directions. North or south winds come exactly sideshore.

The site itself has everything you need, including a small shop, a restaurant and modern sanitary blocks. There is also a surf school on site offering windsurfing, wing and kite courses. Caravans for hire and small beach huts also make the site interesting for occasional campers. In the surrounding area, the Flügger lighthouse offers a magnificent view over the Fehmarn Sound and the Orther Reede roadstead, while Orth itself is easily accessible by bike. Fun fact: The legendary Fehmarn Open Air took place on Flügger Strand in 1970, where Jimi Hendrix played his last gig just a few days before his death - a memorial stone north of the site commemorates this.

Ahoy Camp Altenteil

Altenteil on Fehmarn hardly needs any introduction as a windsurfing spot; with north-westerly wind directions, there is a very good Baltic Sea wave here. The Ahoi Camping Fehmarn site (formerly Fehmarnbelt) changed hands last year and is now part of the Ahoi van hire company.

At the same time, the somewhat dusty seventies charm of the site is gradually being removed and trimmed to vanlife. There is also a beach bar and a small surf shop. Another measure taken by the new operators was to free up the pitches in the front row right by the water for holiday guests and move the permanent campers to the back rows. You can hardly be closer to the spot, even if the premium pitches come at a price.

Wulfener Hals/Fehmarn

Also an absolute classic: the campsite at Wulfener Hals has always been a surfing stronghold. At Burger Binnensee there is a huge standing area for beginners, jibe students and freestylers, while the south side of Fehmarnsund is a little choppier, but still manageable for almost every skill level.

The Windsurfing Hamburg centre offers courses and a large selection of rental equipment. The campsite itself is one of the top campsites in Germany and has everything that makes five-star campsite fans happy, including a pool, catering and entertainment. There is also a golf course and wakeboard centre nearby. There are also cabins and caravans for hire for guests without their own motorhome.

Camp Langholz

From NE to ONE, Langholz is one of the best wave spots in the Eckernförde Bay, with relaxed bump & jump conditions in all southerly to south-westerly wind directions. The coast makes a bend here, and this is exactly where "Camp Langholz" is located. The campsite offers a relaxed, uncomplicated atmosphere. In season, there are often campfires and music, the well-stocked shop sells regional products and the small bistro serves delicious food! The somewhat stony beach and the water are just a few metres away from all the pitches.

There is also a holiday home for non-campers, and the colourful circus wagons in the front row with a view of the water are a highlight. Only those who value luxury furnishings and meticulously trimmed lawns should go somewhere else. At the Baltic Sea storm surge in October 2023 Langholz was badly damaged, but with the help of numerous guests and friends, the site has since been reopened.

Hemmelmark

Hemmelmark lies much deeper in the Eckernförde Bay and therefore has little chance of bigger waves. However, this makes the spot an ideal spot for intermediates and flat water fans. The slightly curved coastline forms a small bay with a standing area where you can have a relaxed start. Vincent Langer's Kids Camp was held here for many years, and the Racer of the Sea has also visited the spot several times for regattas and camps. The campsite has everything you need for a family holiday with a shop, modern sanitary facilities and lots of activities. Eckernförde town centre is easy to reach by bike.

Grönwohld

The Gröhnwohld campsite is a favourite spot for windsurfers and other water sports enthusiasts, with regular events and camps. There is also a surf school on site, Wassersport Schwedeneck. The best conditions here are from east to north-east, especially in early summer, when the wind is thermally strengthened and a six-knot forecast quickly turns into a passable gliding wind. Access is via a beautiful, flat sandy beach, although there may also be a few stones on the shore.

East and west winds blow sideshore, the water is shallow for the first 150 metres and flat sandbanks form a natural barrier to the outside. Further out, you can expect typical flat water to bump & jump conditions, which are great fun for freeriders, freestylers and slalom pilots. There is a restaurant and a well-equipped shop at the campsite. There is a narrow strip of forest between the beach and the campsite with several passages through which the windsurfing equipment has to be carried. Grönwohld was also badly hit by the 2023 storm surge, but according to the campsite, it has been 90% restored.

Surf Centre Wustrow

Not really a campsite in the strict sense, but a lovely pitch for motorhomes and caravans on Fischland between Rostock and the Darß. Behind a small strip of forest and dunes, there is a car park at the surf school with hire, a small surf shop and beach bar. Sanitary facilities for basic needs and electricity connections are also available.

On the west side, there can be a solid wave if the wind is blowing in the right direction, and just a hundred metres away to the east is the Saaler Bodden with shallow water, where up-and-comers can also get their money's worth. The village of Wustrow, with its pier and several restaurants, is easy to reach by bike or on foot.

Hörnum

Not the typical mass surfing spot, but one of the few places on the North Sea where you can start directly from your motorhome or caravan - provided you have sufficient skills for the North Sea and the Sylt shore break, of course. A little further south, the waves are clean and surprisingly moderate. If you like it a little tamer, you can easily walk to the east side to the Südkap Surfing school. Here you will find conditions for young and old, regardless of the tide. At low tide there is a standing area, but at high tide it becomes too deep to stand. The islands of Amrum and Föhr also protect the bay from large swells during westerly storms and thus offer a retreat for freeriders and freestylers. East winds are free and a little choppy, with S and N winds it is perfectly sideshore, wonderfully smooth and SW and NW also work excellently.

The campsite itself is idyllically situated in the middle of the dunes and is divided into a section for caravans and one for motorhomes. There is a restaurant right next door, otherwise the centre of Hörnum is easily accessible on foot or by bike.

Suhrendorf

Between the island of Ummanz, which can be reached via a small bridge, and the offshore island of Hiddensee, what is probably Germany's largest standing area stretches over several square kilometres. Rainbow Camp is the perfect starting point, and the spot itself operates in a wide wind window from south to west to north-east. Because the water, apart from small choppy waves, remains smooth even in storms and you can simply walk back in an emergency, this spot is perfect for all intermediates, jibe fans and freestylers. An easterly wind is also rideable thanks to the flat hinterland, albeit a little gusty, but then you have to go further out into the deep water to have constant wind.

The campsite was taken over by the Rainbow Group in 2021 and offers a full range of facilities including a shop, restaurant, surf school, mini golf and much more! The front pitches are right on the spot, separated from the water only by a narrow meadow. For cracks, Rügen also offers many other spots and attractions!

Born am Darß

On the Saaler Bodden, on the inland side of the Darß, lies Born, one of the most popular shallow water spots in the area. The Regenbogen campsite offers ideal starting conditions with a meadow for rigging and plenty of space for equipment. Although the beach itself is rather narrow, the large standing area means you can always land in a relaxed manner. There is a kite school on the site, so you often have to come to terms with the kiters. The campsite itself is spread out under pine trees and has a rustic, cosy charm. There are numerous excursion destinations and other leisure activities in the surrounding area.

Pepelow on the Salzhaff

The Salzhaff is a sheltered bay between Wismar and Rostock. Westerly winds are somewhat weakened by the Wustrow peninsula, while easterly winds are often strengthened by thermals. A gigantic standing area awaits on the eastern shore, perfect for all climbers, freeriders and freestylers. From the "Ostseecamping am Salzhaff" you can reach the water after just a few metres. A little further south, there are also huts, holiday homes and a surf school in "San Pepelone".

Because the Salzhaff has little water exchange with the Baltic Sea, it warms up noticeably faster than most other spots. In summer, a shorty will suffice, but you can never go wrong with a 4/3. But don't forget the weed fin!
