Play of light on the Brombachsee. The photo was taken on 11 November 2023 at lunchtime on the Großer Brombachsee. The sun had just come out just above the receding cloud front.

You sent us more than 30 pictures for the Surf Photo of the Year competition. We have selected our winning motifs and you can see all the entries in the large gallery!

From crashing wave action to idyllic evenings, from bold freestyle moves to family-friendly freeriding, it was all there: your entries for our 2023 best surf photo poll cover the entire spectrum of windsurfing and wingfoiling. The surf editorial team selected the winner and the winners of the five surf calendars from all the entries. You can see all the entries and the photographers' descriptions in the gallery above!

The winner was the picture taken by Tobias Techet at the large Brombachsee lake between Nuremberg and Augsburg. In the foreground, a freestyler circles a volcano in the glistening sunlight, while a menacing, almost black wall of clouds can be seen in the background. "The photo was taken at midday on 11 November 2023. The sun had just come out just above the receding cloud front," writes the photographer about his picture.

Unusual weather constellations have also produced spectacular images for other entrants. Anne Putensen describes her photo from Altenteil, in which a dark cloud front meets turquoise water, as "Caribbean below, hell above". Frank Siegle-Scheurell's black and white image of a foehn storm on Lake Uri, Ben Behrendt's autumnal sunset in Nørre Vorupør and Ronald Wieger's "Coffee Ride" on the brownish Lake Neusiedl also offer a special look.

Some professional photographers, such as Henning von Jagow and Beeke Fitschen, have also sent in pictures for our photo competition. You know them all from surf magazine as photographers of travel and regatta stories. We don't want to withhold their pictures from you, even if the pictures of the photo pros (have to) run out of competition.
