Laboe is very popular among water sports enthusiasts, with kiters and windsurfers sharing the large standing area in front of the memorial for a long time. The spot at the harbour lay dormant for many years, only the advent of foiling breathed new life into the "forgotten" spot. On good days with a south-westerly wind, people used to wing for all they were worth between the harbour and the leeward lagoon area. This has now come to an end for the time being, as the municipality of Laboe has cut off access to the water for all water sports enthusiasts:"During the bathing season, launching and landing on the beach in front of the harbour is prohibited for safety reasons, we ask all surfers to use the surfing zone in front of the memorial"The beach warden told us. However, with an average water depth of 50 centimetres, the surf zone in front of the memorial is not an option for wingsurfers.
This creates the absurd situation that the shallow swimming area cannot be foiled anyway due to the shallow water depth, but the deep area outside the swimming zone - less than 30 metres from the beach - is no longer accessible for wingsurfers due to lack of access.
We have asked the Laboe municipal administration for a statement and for an adjustment of the swimming zone to ensure access to the spot again. We will keep you up to date.
