The Slingshot Slingwing V4 has been completely redesigned
With the Slingshot Slingwing V4, numerous design changes ensure a much more direct riding experience. Read the test to find out whether the wing also has weaknesses.

The Slingshot Slingwing V4 is designed as an all-rounder for a wide range of applications and complements the Javelin model within the brand ( HERE there's a test of the Boom-Wing). The new model is available in sizes from 2.0 to 7.0 square metres.

On land:

The Slingwing V4 has been completely redesigned in terms of profile, outline and grip system and is slightly more elongated than the Javelin, meaning it has a wider wingspan. The profile depth is neither completely flat nor particularly deep. The Slingwing V4 has a high cloth tension in the leading edge area, towards the trailing edge the canopy material is cut a little looser and is stabilised by small battens. Overall, however, the V4 is much tighter and more compact than its predecessor, the V3, and the wingspan has been reduced by around 15 centimetres. A striking feature is the large window, which provides a very wide viewing corridor - a major safety advantage in crowded spots. The window is also made of very soft material, which in practice proves to be less susceptible to kinking.

New handle system for the V4

The centrepiece of the wing is an interchangeable handle system. The Slingwing V4 is supplied with fixed aluminium grips as standard. However, these can optionally be replaced with carbon handles (surcharge 78 euros). Depending on the size of the wing, this saves between 200 and 300 grams of weight. The change is made possible by a click system, which makes the change quick and tool-free. Whether carbon or aluminium, the handles are pleasantly thin and easy to grip and their shape is somewhat reminiscent of the NeilPryde Fly ( HERE there's a test).

The rest of the equipment is also impressive: the front handle is suitably dimensioned and nice and stiff, the seams and wingtips are protected against chafing with large patches. A leash is also included in the scope of delivery.

On the water:

The Slingwing V4 is nicely balanced in the hand right from the start and offers an even pull upwards. Inflated to the recommended 10 psi, the wing feels almost lifeless when pumped up and is not a powerhouse. However, reducing the inflation pressure slightly (tip: 8-9 psi) gives the V4 noticeably more elasticity, which then translates into absolutely competitive power. Once lifted off, the Slingwing V4 is perfectly balanced and has a good feel in the hand. Overall, the V4 is completely convincing in terms of its wind range: in wind holes it remains stable in the airflow, while in strong gusts it benefits from its tight basic structure - there is no fluttering or warping, the control is exemplary and noticeably improved compared to its predecessor, the V3.

Thanks to the small diameter of the newly designed grips, you can grip with less effort and the grip position can be adjusted with millimetre precision. Longer one-handed rides are not possible due to the position of the handles; if this is important to you, you should look towards the Boom-Wing Javelin. The Slingshot Slingwing V4 is also impressive in manoeuvres: it is easy to steer and feels comfortable and neutral in the hand during turns, jibes and other foil manoeuvres. The Slingwing V4 also performs ambitious freestyle tricks without complaining, although there are wings on the market that are a little lighter and more playful in the hand.

Slingshot underpins the all-round claim of the V4 with good wave performance. When drifting in the waves, the V4 is neutral in the wind and flies stably behind. The tight and well-dimensioned front handle enables direct contact and transmits steering impulses as desired.

Slingshot Slingwing V4 - the conclusion:

The Slingshot Slingwing V4 is absolutely balanced and doesn't show any weaknesses in terms of planing power, control or manoeuvre handling. The bottom line is that although there are more powerful freeride wings and even lighter freestyle wings, the V4 offers a really high level across all criteria and is therefore an ideal all-rounder for freeride, wave or trick riding. And the comparison with its stablemate Javelin? The Slingwing V4 is more neutral and lighter in the waves and during manoeuvres/tricks, whereas the Javelin offers a little more flight stability and control in sporty strong wind racing.

Slingshot Slingwing V4 5.0 - the rating:

Flight stability
Light wind power
Control/Windrange
Manoeuvre handling
Drift/wave
