The new RIOT helmets from the AK Durable Supply brand, which have been CE certified specifically for water sports (CE 1385), are now designed to provide protection as well as an attractive look. Distribution in Germany is handled by APM (distributor of Airush, Starboard, Severne, etc.), so the helmets should be easy to find in many surf shops. With the stated suitability for "canoeing and white water sports", there is certainly nothing to stop it being used for wingsurfing.
Our test sample in size L-XL could be easily adjusted to a large head with the supplied pads, the specification for 59 to 61 centimetres seems to fit well. In comparison with other tested water sports helmets the AK Riot also fits slightly rounder heads well. As an additional size S-M, heads with a circumference of 56 to 58 centimetres are also well catered for. The size is mainly adjusted using the numerous pads supplied, which are attached to the helmet using Velcro - at the front, back, sides and top of the head. After that, only fine-tuning is required with the "screw tensioner" at the back. The helmet sits very securely on the head and the chin strap does not need to be pulled too tight. A solid fastener closes here. However - and this is actually the only minor criticism of the helmet - it is not padded. The inner padding is thinly covered with fabric and appears soft on the surface and medium-firm in terms of cushioning.
Plenty of ventilation openings on the head ensure a good draught, while the ears either remain free or can be closed well with the separately available covers. Small ventilation slits are integrated into the covers. This optional ear cover is secured with press studs and is of course removable.
AK Durable Supply Riot - the conclusion:
The helmet has a high-quality appearance, from the shell and padding to the straps and fasteners. The customisation works well.
Good protection; tight fit on the head
Chin strap not padded
Ear pads must be purchased separately
