Test: Patrik Volant Cross V2 - fast wing for sporty surfers
The Patrik Volant Cross V2 is one of the fastest wings on the market - but it also has weaknesses. Find out what these are in the test.

In addition to the Volant Cross model, Patrik also offers the Volant Cross V2. In the following, we reveal the differences between the two models and who the Volant Cross V2 is suitable for.

On land:

While the Volant Cross model with its lower profile and reduced wingspan is designed to be more suited to the needs of beginners and intermediates, the Volant Cross V2 5.4 that we tested was given a significantly flatter profile and a larger wingspan. The V2 should therefore appeal to sporty wingsurfers who are looking for a fast wing for accelerating. The Patrik Volant Cross V2 is available in a total of eight sizes (1.8/2.4/3.0/3.6/4.2/4.8/5.4 and 6.0 square metres). With a measured wingspan of 355 centimetres, the 5.4 wing we tested is indeed very stretched. It is ventilated via two standard valves, so it has to be re-plugged once. On the other hand, the air is quickly released again when packing.

In the leading edge area, the V2 Wing actually has hardly any profile, the trailing edge was deliberately designed to be loose in order to let off steam in gusts. The handle system is also very special: the actual handle area is stiff, but the handles have been sewn on with soft material at the corners. The idea: to combine the advantages of both systems and minimise the risk of injury or damage.

The grip on the front tube is comfortable and stiff and the wingtips are also protected against abrasion on hard surfaces with additional darts.

In addition to the test report, we also present the Patrik Volant Cross V2 Wing in a short clip on our YouTube channel. Click here!

On the water:

The Volant Cross V2 is indeed designed for performance. This is noticeable as soon as you really get tight in gusts and use the wing in combination with a fast high-aspect foil - then the wing accelerates to absolute top speed. The control in the upper wind range is also absolutely exemplary, only the slight fluttering of the trailing edge is occasionally a little annoying. However, the downside of the flat profile is noticeable when starting off. Here the wing requires a very active riding style, i.e. greater riding ability and active pumping to achieve the necessary take-off speed. Once lifted off, the V2 also loads up a little more hesitantly in windy conditions at the lower limit. The plan to combine the advantages of hard and soft grips doesn't quite work in our eyes. Although the hard handles offer very direct power transmission during rotations, you can't really influence the tip-to-tip angle of attack very well, as the handles tend to twist here. We therefore had problems positioning the wing at the right angle, especially when pumping. However, as soon as you are on the foil and surfing powered up, the wing is well balanced in the hand.

The Volant Cross is also perfect for freestyling and trips into the waves. When jumping, you benefit from the high speed, although the larger wingspan certainly doesn't make it the favourite wing of ambitious trick riders. When drifting on the wave, however, the Patrik Voland Cross V2 floats along in an extremely controllable and neutral manner.

Patrik Volant Cross V2 - the conclusion:

The Volant Cross V2 is a special wing for a limited target group: those who like to accelerate on fast high-aspect foils and perhaps even take part in races such as Defi Wing or Winger of the Sea will find a wing with above-average speed potential here. On the other hand, the V2 is less suitable as a typical light wind wing for gusty inland waters or in combination with thickly profiled loose aspect foils - but Patrik still has the Volant Cross V1 in his programme for such cases.
