For some people, a certain brand changes their whole life. It was his Rusty T-shirt that first caught the attention of his now wife - and then the smart guy in it. Alongside several other brands, Rusty was one of the iconic surf brands whose shirts, shorts and jumpers suddenly made us inland surfers feel transported to California or Australia and cultivated the image of the cool beach bum.
Very few of us knew who Rusty Preisendorfer was, the man behind the stylish and unique designs. The Rusty or R-dot brand, as it is also known in the USA after its logo, has been around since 1953. Founder Rusty Preisendorfer was already producing surfboards in the 1950s, but was hardly known as a manufacturer until the 1980s. No wonder, as the boards for ten of the world's top 16 surfers were still produced under the Canyon label, including for legends such as Occy (Mark Occhilupo) and Shaun Thomson. This changed in 1984 - with the founding of his own brand, Rusty Preisendorfer became known to the masses, and the new fashion label boomed alongside his boards.
The company split in 2006 - Fashion relocated to Perth, Australia, while board production remained in California. In Europe, both divisions are now back together. The new start was initially made by fashion, but it soon became clear that the boards were also in high demand in this country. Also on offer: Wetsuits for men and women.
We can't wait to bring our creative style and high performance boards back to Europe. (Rusty CEO Geoff Backshall)
