Apart from a softer fin set-up, the Pyro enters the new season unchanged. We tested whether it is still competitive.
On the beach
The Severne Pyro comes out of the box with a new look and low weight. The center fins are relatively short, the straps are soft and comfortable, the pads are particularly structured for a good grip on deck. The same inbus key that also works as a batten tensioner is used to mount the fins and the comfortable straps. With its five built-in fin boxes, the board offers all options from single fin to quad setup. A slight mono-concave runs through the bottom from the front to the middle, and the board only gets a slight “V” just before the fins.
On the water
When it comes to planing, the Pyro sets off the first fireworks. It starts planing effortlessly even without an active riding style, accelerates powerfully and reaches a good top speed that encourages every wave fan to catapult themselves to proper heights with the first ramp. When powered up, the Pyro pulls through the chop like a train on the rails, and in choppy conditions you sometimes almost wish for more lift on the straights, meaning a freer planing feeling. Our tip: Mount the straps and mast foot quite far backwards! If you weigh over 85 kilos, you could also consider using 15 cm center fins to give the board a little more lift when planing.
On the wave, the Severne Pyro makes carved turns a real pleasure; hardly any other board offers such good rail grip. Because you don't have to worry about any trouble in the bottom turn and the board also holds its speed superbly, you always arrive at the lip of the wave at full speed. These are the best conditions for all wave moves and cutbacks. However, you have to push a little harder in the turn to elicit really tight radii from the shape, the board generally loves the turns carved over the whole rail rather than the short, fast snaps that you shake out of your ankles in front of micro waves.
Severne Pyro 87 - conclusion
The Pyro is and remains a well-balanced all-rounder that feels just as comfortable in big waves as it does in messy and small wave condions. Thanks to its successful combination of planing power, control and good turning characteristics, the target group ranges from wave beginners to experts.
