A complete surf Foil special edition that not only deals with foils under windsurf boards, but is dedicated to almost everything that flies just above the surface of the water - you can imagine that there was a lot of discussion beforehand. Can we "expect" our die-hard fin windsurfers to do this?
In the end, we clearly said: yes, that's what we want. Mainly because we realised that there are so many water sports enthusiasts who are constantly expanding their horizons - without prejudice, open-minded, as they say these days. The best example of total openness towards everything that glides and foils is Balz Müller. Hardly anyone can escape his arguments in our interview. But even one of Germany's most successful sailors is not afraid to think outside the box with his eyes wide open: Erik Heil has windsurfed, won two bronze medals in sailing with the 49er at the Olympic Games and is currently foiling as skipper on a gigantic catamaran in the SailGP, using wingfoiling as a way of balancing his work and broadening his team's horizons.
So why shouldn't we take you on a tour of the whole world of foiling once a year? Many windsurfers should also be interested in how the wings work in other areas of water sports, for example on America's Cup yachts or the legendary Moth.
And then there was the one central topic in the discussions surrounding this issue: Who will be the first to fly? Flying, of course. Are the windsurfing foilers more likely to get airborne or the wingfoilers, and who will be faster? As there are several multi-sport enthusiasts in the editorial team who practise both intensively, two opinions clashed and there were wild arguments back and forth. Until the boss put an end to the arguments: "Try it out!" No sooner said than done: the ultimate windsurfing foil versus wingfoil duel was born. Find out how it turned out in the magazine!
We hope you enjoy this special issue and promise you that the "normal" surf magazine will remain true to its roots.
