Portugal: Azores
Portugal: Azores
In the middle of the Atlantic, right between the New and Old World, the Azores rise out of the thousands of metres deep ocean. We are all familiar with the Azores High from the weather forecast, which brings plenty of sunshine to Central Europe and lots of wind to the Canary Islands in the summer months. When the high over the Azores has passed, the wind comes to the archipelago.

I once read the ultimate method for finding spots in a surf magazine. A guy put a world map on the wall and then tried to hit a good spot with darts. I liked that. Our darts led us to the Azores - a mystical group of islands surrounded by fog, rising out of the endless depths of the Atlantic and open on all sides to rolling waves. If it weren't for the famous Azores High, which meteorologists like to blame for midsummer weather in Central Europe, none of us would ever have heard of this archipelago, it is so remote and quiet.
