Carbon or aluminium - ProLimit now wants to combine the best of both worlds with the Carbon Tech model, the fork consists of 70 percent carbon and 30 percent fibreglass. We tested whether this concept works.

The front section, end section and pin locks are 1:1 identical to the ProLimit full carbon fork C100. The fork is available in three lengths (140-190/160-220/180-240). At 2.24 kilos, the 140-190 length tested by us is in the same range as the ProLimit full carbon fork, but at 569 euros it costs a whopping 230 euros less. With a tube diameter of 24.5 millimetres - the specification always refers to the bare tube without coating - the Boom is one of the thinnest models on the market, and the grip comfort is correspondingly first-class.

In terms of stiffness, we couldn't find any noticeable disadvantage to the full carbon version in the test in the range up to 160 centimetres in length, not even on hard landings. Only in the adjustment range of 175-190 does the fork appear increasingly softer than a full carbon fork, but despite the thin diameter it is still stiffer than conventional aluminium models.

The bending curve and the wide tail section also provide enough space for bulbous wave and freemove sails. The operation of the fork appears to be fully developed, which is no surprise given the proven Aeron components. The quick release can be folded easily and offers a secure hold, the double pins are solid and an open roller at the end piece ensures fast rigging in "loop-and-go" mode.

surf conclusion: The grip comfort of the Carbon Tech is top, the stiffness is at a very decent level despite the lower carbon content, so that even as a waver over 85 kilos you can push the adjustment range to the limit. Overall, the fork offers a good combination of stiffness, grip comfort and a fair price.
