We tested seven freerace sails around 7.5 square metres! You can find out which ones here!

In addition to the Freemoveboards 115 and Freeride sailing around 6.5 square metres a few weeks ago in Tobago, the surf test team also chased seven freerace sails between 7.5 and 7.8 square metres across the water. You'll be able to read the full test in the next issue, but you can get a first glimpse in the gallery above.

These sails are included in the test:

  • GA Sails Cosmic 7.7
  • Goya Mark 2 7.8
  • GunSails Exceed 7.5
  • NeilPryde V8 7.7
  • Point-7 AC-Z 7.8
  • RRD Fire 7.8
  • Severne Turbo 7.5

As usual, we pitted the sails against each other with identical boards and similarly heavy testers. We analysed planing, speed, behaviour on different courses and on different gybe radii.

All sails have at least two cams and a batten in the lower section that runs diagonally through the fork. Depending on the class, the trim forces and handling are a little less comfortable than with the freeride brothers - we'll tell you in the test where you'll have to put a lot of effort into the setup and which models are relatively easy to handle! There are also tips on the best trim for some models.

Speed is a key criterion in the freerace sector, as this class is the first choice for many hobby racers. Here too, there are differences between the seven candidates, depending on the wind. Some sails are rather strong in light winds, others develop their full potential when fully powered up. You can read all about the seven freerace sails in surf 5/2023, in stores from 26 April!
