The board manufacturer We One from Austria presented itself to the windsurfing community for the first time at boot Düsseldorf 2023 and the surf festival ( HERE there's an interview). The brand has now amassed an impressive portfolio - we took the We Style Wave 95 crossover board for a first test.
On land:
The We One We Style Wave 95 is manufactured in a high-quality double sandwich construction and weighs 7.19 kilos in the test size of 95 litres. The scope of delivery includes the pleasantly soft straps, which are fixed in double plugs with Allen screws. The fins are not included; the board is designed as a twinser. However, thanks to an additional power box, the board can also be ridden as a single fin. The long fin boxes for the twin fins are striking. This gives you plenty of scope to customise the board. However, you should definitely get suitable covers (e.g. from K4Fins) if you want to ride the board as a single fin, as the long boxes produce noticeable additional riding resistance when open. According to the manufacturer, the covers will be available soon from We One.
The shape itself stands out with its wide, spoon-shaped nose. The edges in the centre run comparatively parallel. A pronounced V can be seen in the underwater hull - this implied keel should allow the board to enter choppy waves smoothly.
On the water:
With its rather rounded and quite narrow tail, the We One We Style Wave wants to be loaded a little more sensitively when bobbing, but as soon as you get up to speed, the board stabilises well. Keyword "acceleration": With the 16 twinser fins from K4 Fins provided to us for the test, passive planing and acceleration were rather below average. Our recommendation would be twinserfins with a length of 18 to 19 centimetres. This would cover a sail range from 4.2 to 6.0. Once powered up, the We Style Wave runs nicely damped in the chop, the pronounced "V" in the underwater hull ensures a soft start. However, you can hardly get a completely free-flying feeling from the board with a twinser setup. In manoeuvres, the We One concept turns smoothly and can be stabilised on the edge even without a high level of riding skill.
The concept is absolutely convincing in terms of "freestyle wave". Other brands usually market all-round concepts for flat water and bump & jump under this label, which are less suitable for proper freestyling and wave surfing. We One is different. Thanks to the wide nose, the Weestyle Wave is very suitable for celebrating sliding moves such as spocks or flakas. Moderate turns with longer radii also work quite well, which is why the We Style Wave 95 makes perfect sense as a small freestyle waveboard.
Equipped with a single fin, we recommend a length between 25 and 27 centimetres, the board rides noticeably more freely in a straight line and achieves a sportier planing position and higher top speed. However, the long US boxes have above-average braking power when open. Therefore, you should definitely get suitable covers (e.g. from K4Fins) if you want to ride the board as a single fin. According to the manufacturer, the covers should be available soon from We One - then the board would be a well-rounded product.
We One We Style Wave 95 - the conclusion:
We One interprets the label "freestyle wave" in the literal sense: the board scores first and foremost under the feet of ambitious riders who are looking for a board for tricks and moderate waves. As a sporty, fast flat water board and for effortless planing, however, the concept does not pass muster, at least in twinser mode - although an upgrade is possible with single fin. In view of the high-quality construction, the price of 1789.99 euros seems absolutely fair.
